One of the most difficult times in a manager's or mayor's life must be after a revaluation when assessments have gone out and homeowners learn the amount of their tax bill increases. The thousands of owners who get increases far in excess of the levy increase (soon to be capped at annual 4%) vent their frustration on the administration and with good reason. Under the R.I.G.H.T. plan this is a thing of the past. New owners are taxed exactly as currently, on their market value using a rate based on the revaluation of the entire town. But everyone else will pay a tax that will increase no more than the increase in the tax levy, much as we do in a non revaluation year. Appeals and disputes about property value will be but a memory. The total money raised is exactly the same under both the R.I.G.H.T. plan and the current revaluation method. There is no impact on the revenue raised. |
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the proposals offered by R.I.G.H.T. be used as a model to stimulate legislative discussion, debate and ultimately to restore fairness in property tax procedures. Kimberly Aguiar Know someone hurt by soaring property taxes? We'd love to talk to them.
