Property Tax
Are you paying more than your fair share?

After North Kingstown's 2006 revaluation, the 2007 tax levy increased 5.25%. However most people (2/3) got an average tax increase of 17%, more than triple the increase in the levy!  Why? Because with a revaluation, all owners are taxed on the market value of their property.

Revaluation insures a fair tax for new property owners on the market value of their home and know what their taxes will be. A new owner can decide not to buy if the taxes are too high.

But for existing homeowners, a tax based on those market values requires owners to pay taxes as if they just bought their home at the market price whether or not they could afford to or to pay the taxes on the home's market value.

(Treating market values as if they were the same as real money is a major contributor to the recent collapse of our financial system.)

See the impact for yourself. Select a town, scroll or search by name or address or plat number and see how (your) property tax compares to others.

The red numbers are the results of the RIGHT proposal, the adjacent columns show what actually happened with conventinal revaluation.

Please be patient as these are very large PDF files and could take up to 20 seconds to load .

Cranston (12.0 mb)
[We received no addresses for Cranston. (note: Cranston had five (5) different tax rates at that time.  This file averages them.)]

Barrington (2.8 mb)
[We were not given the sales data so we randomly inserted 100 "sales" to show how this would effect results.]

Please note: there is no effect on new owners; their red numbers and black numbers are nearly identical. However, after they become existing owners the following year, they will pay the same percentage increases as all existing owners.

The R.I.G.H.T. Plan produces exactly the same tax revenue as the present method of property taxation but taxes all owners fairly every year.

Also, check the links below to read how the R.I.G.H.T. plan affects different groups and especially read the FAQ for a thorough summary.
