Property Tax
Are you paying more than your fair share?

The only way we can hope to change the unfairness of current policy is to change laws.  This won't happen without a clear message from you.  Please consider signing this petition.  It will be forwarded to the Legislature.

Whereas the Rhode Island Constitution, Article 1, Section 2 states in part "… and the burdens of the state ought to be fairly distributed among its citizens" and

Whereas principles of fair taxes require that:

1) taxes bear some relation to ability to pay
2) individual tax bills be related to the needs of the community and

Whereas tax bills resulting from RI General Law §44-5-1 fulfill neither of the stated principles,

Therefore, we the undersigned urge the legislature to re-consider Rhode Island General Law §44-5-1, which requires the use of market property values to determine the distribution of the tax burden, and to discuss alternative means and methods to address this inherent failure to produce fair taxes.
